Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra : Review – Sony has long bet on midrange terminals and the new Xperia Ultra XA1 is a smartphone that embodies this definition with a little more than the competition and above the selling price. We tried it, and these are our considerations.
The new Sony Xperia Ultra XA1 was presented by Nissan during the last Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona with his older brother XZ premium but also to various XZS Xperia and Xperia XA1. Precisely the latter turns out to be his brother “plus” with a very large display but also a media sector that certainly will not begrudge another more famous smartphone. Sony, therefore, bet again once on the same design that characterizes many years and this new XA1 Ultra poses a major upgrade to the rear camera while maintaining what it was like for those who had bought in the past the XA Ultra predecessor.
As for the design, as mentioned, the new Xperia XA1 Ultra takes a look virtually identical for years with some variations on the theme but with the usual huge upper and lower bands so hated by users. In this case, the new smartphone from the Japanese company, in a nutshell, is basically the Xperia XA1, only bigger but this statement is perhaps not completely accurate. In more carefully looking effects and especially by measuring it is understood that the Japanese pharmaceutical company has not only enlarged the body but has also worked to get a great smartphone yes but “manageable”, which for a phone with a 6-inch display is not what simple.
In the left part of the smartphone is present the classic trolley for accommodating the SIM which in this case turns out to be nano type with next also space for MicroSD ready to increase the storage space. Inevitable then notice the presence in front of an important sensor, for size, for taking a selfie which can moreover also be carried out in low light conditions thanks to the presence of an LED flash.
The display Xperia XA1 Ultra is undoubtedly its strength: an IPS LCD panel with 16 million colors with a diagonal of 6 inches Full HD resolution that is 1920 x 1080 pixels and 367 PPI. A pixel density is not high but it is clear that we are talking about an important display in terms of area and above all a practical level we can not but admit that it reaches a high yield. Yes, because the colors are alive with good contrasts and more than satisfactory brightness. In fact, it is a huge screen and thanks to the markedly reduced frames to a minimum we have the impression that in the hands of only possesses a display. A nice effect.
Sin perhaps for some flaws that are noticed when the display is viewed from extreme angles with a yield not optimal and with colors that appear slightly dull and not as lively as with the front display. Nothing dramatic, especially for the fact that the panel is improved, compared to its predecessor but also because Sony allows adjusting precisely the hue of the display to improve the image quality but also to perform a white balance such as to be able to really get the best from a smartphone in every situation.
As for performance, we must first consider the fact that the new Sony Xperia Ultra XA1 is a mid-rage smartphone and therefore we can not expect outstanding results. But be careful because during daily use of the device there are no jamming of any kind as well as blocks or lag that make it hard to use. Indeed, the device behaves fairly well with many applications in the background and even some applications such as demanding games may take a few seconds longer to boot, everything still works well and smoothly.

Looking at the data sheet we can find out how the new Xperia XA1 Ultra Sony owns a MediaTek P20 processor that is nothing but an Octa-Core (4 to 2.3 GHz core and 4-core 1.6 GHz) with 64-bit architecture supported by well 4GB of RAM that are not always found in a mid-range product. We say that these processors have never been known for energy efficiency in this case, however, the process to 16nm has allowed to increase performance, reducing overheating in demanding sessions.
Do not forget the graphic card Mali T880 MP2 and an internal storage of 32GB which, as mentioned, will be expanded with a classic MicroSD up to 256GB . In terms of connectivity we are witnessing the presence of an LTE module up to 150 Mbps download and the presence of Wi-Fi a / b / g / n with support for 5GHz networks. Present Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC chip and the presence of FM radio which seems more and more a chimera in the latest generation of smartphones.
INTERFACE GRAPHICS: Android 7.0 Nougat
A Sony reluctantly decided to launch the new Xperia Ultra XA1 not with the latest software version available. On your smartphone the Japanese company laid Android 7.0 Nougat joined the usual Xperia user interface that has not changed much compared to that found sull’Xperia X last year.
Some features, like more options in the toolbar shortcuts or multi windows mode, are present natively in the Android version: Sony has just added some themes and backgrounds or has pre-installed some apps like Sketch and Movie Created r still on occasion can useful. The application menu is still present and is functional thanks to research the app by entering the name or even to multiple uninstall the same without having to drag them one by one app.
Present the area of classical notifications introduced with Android 7.0 Nougat that allows to better organize and especially personally each type of toogle from that for the activation of the Wi-Fi connection to that of the data passing through the brightness, airplane mode, the flashlight and many other features. Do not forget even the presence of a mode that allows users to change the graphical interface allowing you to use with one hand and thus miniaturizing a part of the display of the UI screens.
As stated previously one of the best features of the Xperia line Ultra is the front camera designed to make selfies quality. In this case, the sensor present in the new Xperia XA1 Ultra even reaches 16 megapixels and is based on the Sony Exmor RS technology with an aperture of 22mm.Needless to say, the lens allows you to take pictures in more detail both in the case of self-portraits to landscapes or photos with more people. There is present an angle of very broad vision but unavoidable to realize multiple quality shots that the sensor is able to immortalize in any situation even in low light view the presence of a Flash front LED.
As for the main camera, on the other hand, we are in the presence of a 23-megapixel camera with Exmor RS sensor: a system that has ISO sensitivity up to 6400, focal aperture f / 2.0, 24mm wide angle and zoom Clear Image by 5X. Here we find a software technology called Clear Image Zoom through which you can take pictures with digital zoom, up to five times higher than other phones, and with less blur regardless of ambient light conditions.
Depending on whether you want to shoot with the format to 4: 3 or 16: 9, the images clearly will be performed with a resolution of 22.8MP or 20.1MP and never full of 24.8MP to which the sensor may still go. Nothing bad now that a smartphone allows excellent shots with the peculiarities of reaching a very important level of detail and the absence of noise during daylight hours or so daylight. The images are sharp with a few artifacts thus allowing an excellent final result. The dynamic range is wide and although the Superior Auto mode can not always recognize the scene point and shoot allows even beginners to create precise images.
Present clearly the manual mode that lets the user completely free to parameterize the shots from the focus, white balance, but also set the HDR often with the automatic is not “chosen” by the algorithm from Sony. In this case, it is clear as an experienced user can achieve very attractive levels in the shots with professional images.
For video, the new Xperia XA1 Ultra lets you record video in Full HD. The Japanese company did not allow this smartphone can go further, perhaps to 4K, perhaps in order to avoid obvious overheating problems during filming. In this case, the videos are shot at 30 fps and are of good quality with always well reproduced colors and especially fluid without any jumping whatsoever.
Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra is equipped with a 2700 mAh battery that at least on paper could pose some fear being undersized for the size of the product is for 6 inches of the monitor display. The skepticism, however, proved unfounded given that the smartphone has experienced resistance results quite respectable especially for the low amperage.
With a classic use of navigations, messages, photo shots and video recordings as well as media playback, the Sony Xperia Ultra XA1 can safely reach the end of the day. Besides the great work made by Sony with its saving mode and Ultra STAMINA allow the user to increase the autonomy for several hours. In this case the first turn off non-essential features such as GPS, vibration and reduces the processor power.
Ultra Stamina is instead for occasions absolutely “despair” ie when it is not in a position to be able to recharge the smartphone for a long period of time. Activating this mode can significantly extend the life of the battery, however, at the expense of disabling the Wi-Fi or data traffic as well as a transformation of the Home graphic that only allow the use of basic applications such as telephone, SMS, camera or even the calculator or music.
Sony has developed a Xperia XA1 Ultra very interesting albeit mid rage. The brand aims to repeat his successful formula by adding a slimmer design and trying to give more personality to the smartphone. It ‘still clear that Sony does not want to deviate too much from this one aspect which is now a symbol of itself, but in the long run could also become a problem especially for the presence of the “famous” two really too bulky bands. The 6-inch display certainly makes it, perhaps, a product too niche for the current fashion that tends to “enlarge” the displays.
For the rest of the smartphone performs well with a good balance of performance as well as to the independence and the camera that allows excellent shots in line with much more expensive smartphone sensors. The sale price of the new Sony Xperia Ultra XA1 is ₹29,000 almost as many products in this range even if it is high.
