As scheduled, on July 26, 2017, Xiaomi presented version 9 of its mobile operating system MIUI, which has started working since last November. MIUI 9 is based on Android 7.x Nougat and made its debut the very day that the new Xiaomi Mi 5X smartphone was introduced , the first Xiaomi device with MIUI 9 out of the box. Xiaomi also announced that MIUI, since its introduction in August 2010, is currently used in 55 languages, 142 countries and has 2.8 billion active users.
Following all the news from MIUI 9 including the three key features: Image Search, Smart Assistant and Smart Launcher app.
MULTITASKING . The feature that Google introduced natively into Android 7.0 Nougat, on Xiaomi phones upgraded to this release has been removed, but is ready to be introduced with MIUI 9. Xiaomi has confirmed that the following phones will be supported for multitasking: Mi 6, Mi Mix, Mi Note 2, Mi Max, Mi Max 2, Mi 5, Redmi Note 4X.
SPLIT-SCREEN . The split screen, as perceived by the literal translation of the word ‘split screen’, allows you to divide the display into two parts so that you can use one to run one app and another to perform another one. For example, on a split screen, In a screen you could browse the web while on the other hand you might answer a mail.
LOOK-SCREEN SCREENING. Xiaomi with MIUI 9 introduces the shortcuts on the lock screen. For example, a swipe to the right will open a menu with access buttons to Mi Home, Mi Remote, Mi Pay, Transport Card and Torch.
SEARCH IMAGES . MIUI 9 integrates an intelligent image search function that lets you search photos inside the gallery by filtering people, locations, events, and more. Image search is something completely new to Xiaomi devices, but you may have seen it in the Google Photos app. You can search for images by keywords of what’s in the image.
SMART LAUNCHER . Smart launcher launches an app based on the content displayed on the screen. For example, you can open Maps if you are talking about going somewhere in a chat or helping you read more about an artist if you’re reading an article about him.
INTELLIGENT ASSISTANT . The third most important improvement of MIUI 9 is the smart assistant, able to find anything from photos to text on the phone. Xiaomi would like to compare it with Google Assistant, but only when the ROM will be deployed around the world, as MIUI 9 launches are only available in China.
NEW THEMES. At least three new themes to debut with MIUI 9, called Cool Black, No Boundary and Color Fantasy.
PERFORMANCE . Significant improvements are system improvements, with Xiaomi promising reduced application loading times, a new file system, improved cache management, and dynamic resource allocation. Xiaomi said the application launch time is “faster than ever”. Improvement is achieved thanks to a particular CPU acceleration and a better haptic response. If you are using an application, this gets the priority of system resources to ensure consistent performance.
On July 19th , the Xiaomi official forum was shared with the complete list of existing Xiaomi devices that will be upgradable to the new MIUI 9 . This list includes: Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5s, Mi 5c, Mi 5, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi 4, Mi 3, Mi 2 / 2S, Mi MIX, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi Note 2 , Mi Note / Pro, Mi Pad 2, Pad Pad 1, Redmi Note 4X (MTK), Redmi Note 4X (SD), Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 3 (MTK) Redmi Notes, Redmi Pro, Redmi 4X, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4, Redmi 4 Prime, Redmi 3S / Prime, Redmi 3, Redemi 2A, Redmi 2 / Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi 1. There may be features not available in all of the above models.
In April, Xiaomi opened a survey on MIUI forums to test users’ interest in split-screen functionality, and it turned out that almost 80% of the 7,000 users who responded to the survey would like to have the functionality on the their device.
With regard to availability, the first smartphone with MIUI 9 out-of-the-box is the Xiaomi Mi 5X announced on July 26, while the upgrade build for existing devices is first distributed to China and then to the rest of the world.
