he start-up GamePad Digital, having concluded with great success the campaign Indiegogo taking home more than $ 3 million, has started the mass marketing of their mini pocket computer Pocket GPD.
It is a small PC 7-inch touchscreen with onboard, choice, Windows 10 Home or Ubuntu 16 and is designed for use in mobility without sacrificing performance.
Very clean and simple, with a magnetic opening. Inside we find, in addition to GPD Pocket:
- American Charger (with supplied adapter ) from 5V 2.5A
- Cable by USB Type-C to USB Type-C for recharging
- Cover by lay above the touchscreen display
- Manuals vary.
Design and materials
It is extremely compact, the weight of 480 grams and dimensions of 180 × 106 × 18.5mm enable the device to be easily transported and have not had too many problems in carrying it around simply by inserting it in one of my trouser pockets. Body unibody made of magnesium alloy, it is very solid and well-built thanks also to the use of CNC machines for its construction.
There are no logos o Marchi if not at the bottom, in addition to the four rubber feet to ensure a better grip.
The screen is a unit IPS LCD with the touch surface and resolution 1920 x 1200 pixels and aspect ratio 16:10. It responds very well to touches, but we must be particularly precise in the presence of modest size buttons or otherwise of small elements clickable. Good viewing angle, blacks are well-contrasted colors and well played. Not at the top visibility in the presence of sunlight. Unfortunately, it is not easy to interact with the graphic elements placed in the Windows navigation bar since the very square shape hinders the PC not just performing these operations. The whole is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Glass.
On board we find an Intel Atom CPU x7-Z8750 from 1.6GHz 64-bit quad-core processor with turbo boost up to 2.56GHz, accompanied by Intel HD Graphics 405 integrated graphics card from 200MHz with a maximum frequency of 600MHz. The 8GB of RAM LPDDR3-1600 ensure multitasking rather fluid and allow you to run many applications simultaneously. Be warned though: the processor is not the top, so you may still suffer some sort of slowdowns during the use of the content, especially if expensive in terms of performance. Also, the fan often comes into operation even when you are not doing particularly expensive operations.
Storage is provided by an SSD 128GB eMMC. I used CrystalDiskMark 5 to verify the actual speed for reading and writing: is not extremely high-performance, but definitely faster compared to a traditional mechanical hard drive.
The QWERTY keyboard with American mechanical layout has no backlight but has a convenient TrackPoint place in the middle of the space bar and the selection keys. Use it can be useful for a greater accuracy in the selection, replacing the fingertips. Writing is not always easy: press the letter A is often complicated since it is slightly “out of reach”, while the button Delete is small and hard to press.
There are also several ports available to put on the right side of the GPD Pocket:
- 1 USB Type-C
- 1 micro HDMI
- 1 input jack 3,5mm
- 1 USB Type A
You can choose whether to have after buying Windows 10 Home or Ubuntu 4.16 LTS. We tested the Windows version on board, but it is not excluded that in the near future also not be testing the model with onboard Linux.
The system is fluid, also operates the SSD memory. By installing many applications you will notice a slight slowdown during the execution of certain operations, far from rare event of an operating system like Windows. Overall unable to perform all the basic user-requested actions, such as writing on Word, watch videos on Netflix, YouTube, email, and play. I tried Minecraft (installed by default) and Asphalt 8: the first presents a rather low frame rate (I did not expect anything different, but I was struck by the discreet playability), while the latter is definitely more fluid and optimized, and I did not have problems during gameplay. L ‘ opening of the app is fast and smoothly as Windows starts.
Unbelievable but true, they are also able to render a short video with Adobe Premiere Pro! In addition to warm up a bit ‘, it did not take too long to complete the task entrusted to him.
It has a non-removable lithium-polymer 7000mAh which guarantee a stated duration of approximately 12 hours, and actually is so: with an average use will bring you safely at the end of the day, with a more intense use, however, it may be necessary to reload for guaranteeing a bit ‘more autonomy. The charge is, however, slow: it takes a little more than 4 hours for a full charge.
It has chip Bluetooth 4.1 and Wifi 802.11 a / b / g / n dual band : the latter is not particularly effective given the limited radius of action which in some cases can prove annoying and limiting as GPD Pocket will have difficulty to connect in places where an ordinary smartphone or computer would succeed in order without problems.
We are facing a sound card Realtek ALC5645 with built-in stereo speakers. The sound quality borders on the sufficiency and seems to come from under the keyboard. It’s definitely not the key feature of this mini computer.
The cost is not exorbitant, but not so cheap and accessible. The sale price declared by the company is $ 599 if purchased once the Indiegogo campaign (sorry, it’s too late to buy it on the cheap …).
